On 28 September 2023, the World Maritime Day was celebrated around the globe with the theme of "MARPOL at 50 - Our commitment goes on".

The theme reflects IMO long history of protecting the environment from the impact of shipping via a robust regulatory framework and emphasizes its ongoing commitment to this important work. The theme 'MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on' spotlights the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), which covers prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

The Annex V of MARPOL is one of the main regulatory legal bodies applied by the GloLitter Partnerships Project, prohibits ships from discharging garbage into the sea. Through the GloLitter Partnershps Project and the application of MARPOL Annex V, the project enables the establishment of garbage management plans and port reception facilities in SIDS.

For this occasion and to talk more about the scope of the GloLitter Partnerships Project, Mr. Adonis Tafangy, Director of Legal, International and Environmental Affairs from the Agence Portuaire Maritime et Fluviale, presented the GloLitter Partnerships Project in Antananarivo, the Republic of Madagascar where the forum of the World Maritrime Day was held.
